Promoting
Independent Living for Hostel Residents
The
purpose of ‘The Hostel Project’ is to help individuals
who are currently living in hostels, within Dundee, that are
in desperate need of advice and support to help them achieve
independent living, in some cases this can possibly be for
the first time.
Positive Steps are currently taking referrals from a number
of homeless hostels within Dundee. Each referral will be assessed
against the following criteria:
-Service Users not currently undergoing re-settlement
-Service Users who cannot move towards independent living
without intensive support
-Service Users who could be long-term residents, particularly
those with mental health problems.
The project consists of a 12-week course of advice, support
and assistance in a variety of exercises and events for each
service user.
The course looks at participants abilities to manage their
money and develop confidence in their abilities to look after
themselves emotionally as well as physically. For others it
may be a move onto further re-settlement in a self-contained
unit in one of the hostels. This means that subjects such
as self-esteem, confidence building, health and fitness are
targeted at a certain level for each Service User.
Main Aims
The
main aim and objective of this new service is to provide individuals
with the opportunity to progress in life and to help move
them onto the next stage of independence. At each important
stage of the 12-week course, Positive Steps experienced staff
reassess individuals as to their housing needs, and as a direct
result applications are submitted to housing providers. This
is also an opportunity for individuals to be recommended for
housing support with Positive Steps.
On successful completion of the course individuals receive
a cerrtificate and Positive Steps hosts a ‘Graduation
Day’ to congratulate the service users on their hard
work and continued progress within the programme.
