A New Project Is Born
The Accommodation Project...
In
response to the ever-increasing problem of homelessness, organisations
have striven to do the best that they can and sometimes this
requires individuals to be accommodated in Bed and Breakfast
properties.
This
is not the desired end result as it is not the solution to
the problem as some of these families need support and managed
advice. This is difficult to provide within Bed and Breakfast
accommodation, especially with the increasing numbers presenting
as homeless.
Positive
Steps has been contracted by Dundee City Council for one year
to provide assistance to between 80 and 90 families and individuals
currently living in Bed and Breakfast accommodation. The purpose
of this project is to assist the council and help people in
Bed and Breakfast accommodation to move onto more permanent
housing.
Working
in partnership with Dundee City Council ‘The B&B
Project’ works with a range of organisations and charities
such as Dundee Cyrenians, The Salvation Army, Dundee Survival
Group and several housing associations.
With
the go ahead issued in June, Positive Steps is currently starting
to provide these individuals and families with a tailored
package of assistance according to their circumstances and
required needs.
The
initial task for Positive Steps is to meet with these families
and individuals to build a relationship, assess housing needs
and to help find suitable accommodation depending on the needs
identified.
Suitable
accommodation could fall into the categories of tenancy or
accommodation within a hostel or resettlement facility.
The
Positive Steps B&B team are committed to improving the
lives of the homeless and to motivating individuals to take
a few ‘positive steps’ from homelessness to living
in their own tenancy within the community. The following months
will allow Positive Steps to fully settle into this development
role and as a direct result help the lives of many families
and individuals.
